What meat-alternatives are available?
In the last decade there has been a proliferation of meat and fish substitutes in supermarkets, usually made from soy, gluten, nuts or legumes. “Fry’s” for example, has a wide range of vegan products including sausages, burgers, and patties, and the firm has been generous in supporting vegan activities in New Zealand. Sunfed, a NZ company, produces Sunfed Chicken Free Chicken, Boar Free Bacon and Bull Free Beef and they are all made from pulses such as yellow peas.
what dairy substitutes are available?
There has also been a proliferation of dairy substitutes, including nut milks, soy milk and oat milk which are all now available in supermarkets, dairies and cafés. Moreover there is a wide range of vegan cheeses, yoghurt and butters made from the same sources. Note that in Countdown stores vegan products have their own section, whereas in other supermarkets, vegan cheeses, for example, will usually be on shelves with other cheeses. NZ brands of vegan cheeses include Angel Food, Zenzo and Savour.
are there vegan fast foods?
Yes there are. Most fast food outlets offer vegan options. Here in Whangarei these include Burgerfuel, St Pierre's Sushi +Bento Bowl, Hotspot Takeaways, and Pita Pit. Some fast food joints in New Zealand’s larger cities have a totally vegan menu, for example Wise Boys Burgers and Lord of the Fries. And most supermarkets now stock a wide range of vegan fast foods, usually in the freezer department. These include vegan burger patties and meat substitutes. There are also packaged vegan curries available. BP and Z petrol stations, nationwide, sell vegan pies and sausage rolls.
what are the environmental benefits by going vegan?
When people stop consuming animal products they not only reduce cruelty levels associated with the consumption of animals, but they also benefit our environment. According to an article in RNZ news, nitrogen from cattle urine and fertiliser often ends up in our waterways promoting the growth of plants in the water, and contributes to algal blooms, reduced oxygen levels and reduced light. An article in Stuff News reports that more than 60% of New Zealand rivers are unswimmable. Mike Joy, a NZ ecologist, says that too much nitrogen in the water is bad for fish and that three-quarters of New Zealand’s fish species are at risk of extinction.
As well, water consumption in farming competes strongly with other water uses. In 2017, according to Scoop Business, utilizing DairyNZ numbers, economist Peter Fraser and agricultural consultant Dr Alison Dewes, calculated that the water consumption of New Zealand dairy farms as being equivalent to the residential use of 60 million people.
Clearly then, a vegan lifestyle positively affects our environment.
